Clergy Abuse - Asbestosis of The Soul
Clergy Abuse - Asbestosis of The Soul
An argument why clergy abuse damage claims should have no statute of limitationIn the last ten years, since I became an advocate for clergy sex abuse victims, I've heard many comments and questions concerning clergy abuse. I've protested at so many locations, I've lost count, but many times I've seen and heard the same questions, the same comments, and witnessed the same mixed reactions. The reasons and answers I gave melted together, and I developed an inevitable theory concerning the clergy abuse issue, and the affects it has had on victims, and their families.
Through the years I came to the conclusion that clergy abuse is eerily similar to asbestosis, perhaps it was inspired by my knowledge as a contractor, blended with my knowledge as an abuse survivor. The first time the conclusion entered my head was 4 years ago, at a protest outside a church, when a distraught parishioner clenched his fist at me, and said, "What is your problem? Why don't you guys get over it? It was along time ago".
I thought about what he said, and I asked myself the same question. Why don't I get over it? Then it hit me. Asbestos exposure. That was the answer.
When a person is exposed to asbestos, the affects and sickness that results may not show up immediately. The affects can show up 10, 20, or 30 years later, and can produce irreparable damage. The same can happen with an abuse victim. Symptoms may show up years later, and sometimes the victim didn't even realize why the symptoms occurred.
And many times, no matter what therapy, or doctor a victim may consult, they may never "get over it". The poison is always inside.
The companies responsible for the creation and exposure to asbestos knew decades ago that the exposure causes harm, and they were hurting innocent people, yet they hid the information from the public, even though they were warned by their own internal
investigations that they were abusing unsuspecting victims. They covered their crimes, and continued the abuse. Then they failed to correct it.
The church was warned years ago that they were harming innocents on a wide scale, and they failed to correct the problem. They too, covered their crimes.
Some people were exposed to asbestos, and it had little effect on them, and they did live through it unscathed. But others did not. Many suffered years from the effects, and became ill, suffering from anxiety, disease, depression, and unwilling and unable to continue. Many died from the effects, an undeserved result. Some committed suicide.
Some clergy abuse victims also were not effected as badly as others, or totally consumed by their abuse, others were not so fortunate. Many became depressed, and unable to rid themselves of the poison. Many suffered depression, anxiety, illness, and were unwilling and unable to continue. An undeserved result. Many did commit suicide.
Asbestos can cause scarring inside the victims body, and although invisible on the outside of the victim, the interior scars are permanent.
Clergy abuse can cause scarring in a victims soul, and although invisible on the outside, the interior scars can be permanent. Clergy abuse can also cause irreparable emotional damage.
Asbestos abuse is the result of a large, wealthy syndicate, who negligently placed their victims at risk, causing mass destruction to innocent unsuspecting victims, many who suffered their entire lives.
Clergy abuse is the result of a large, wealthy syndicate, who negligently placed their victims at risk, causing mass destruction to innocent unsuspecting victims, many who suffered their entire lives.
Many asbestos victims unwillingly shared the exposure to their families, and their families suffered from the exposure as well, a collateral tragedy.
Many clergy abuse victims unwillingly shared the effects of their abuse with their families, also a collateral tragedy.
The executives at asbestos companies denied responsibility, claiming they were unaware of the horrific crimes they committed, and refused to accept accountability.
They were sued for their activities, and the lawsuits are still continuing, as new victims,
many of them abused in the past, who still are suffering from their exposure years ago, are coming forward to this day.
The hierarchy of the church denied responsibility, claiming they were unaware of the horrific crimes they committed, and refused to accept accountability. They were sued for their activities, and the lawsuits are still continuing, as new victims, many of them abused in the past, who are still suffering from their exposure years ago, are coming forward to this day.
Asbestos damage caused by the irresponsible is worldwide. Clergy abuse caused by the irresponsible is worldwide. Healing from the exposure to either atrocity is difficult, if not impossible.
And finally, asbestosis victims are able to file claims against the entities that caused the harm to them regardless of a statute of limitation in most cases, because the exposure itself causes damage that surfaces many years far past the dates of exposure. Decades in most cases, because of the delayed personal damage that occurs to the victims.
Asbestosis is very similar to clergy abuse damage in so may ways, it should be used as a comparison for claims against the entities responsible as a valid argument in the legal arena to sidestep any statute of limitation for ongoing personal damage.
And so, the next time anyone sees me at a protest, and says, "What is your problem, why don't you get over it?"
I'll answer correctly, "I have asbestosis of the soul".

Myth #2 - Most sexual abuse of boys is perpetrated by homosexual males.
Pedophiles who molest boys are not expressing a homosexual orientation any more than pedophiles who molest girls are practicing heterosexual behaviors. While many child molesters have gender and/or age preferences, of those who seek out boys, the vast majority are not homosexual. They are pedophiles.
